Teng Ye

(?   -    ) Chinese author, winner of numerous online writing competitions organized by the Douban site, whose English-language debut was "Yuzhou-pian Xiangyan" (in Scifi New Year Gala, anth 2017; trans by Yang Yuzhi as "Universal Cigarettes" in Dawning in the East, anth 2017), in which a rep from a Drugs company hits upon the idea of despoiling the Earth in order to create a perpetually smoking tower of tobacco. Beyond the discussion of the technology required for such a Big Dumb Object, the tale swiftly reveals itself as Satire, not merely of the hubris of marketing executives, but of the delusions of the addict.
