Worm Ouroboros

The world-circling Serpent which devours its own tail; this closed loop symbolizes eternity. In E R Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros (1922) it represents eternal return, as the Gods permit the Story to loop back on itself. A miniature Ouroboros fills a circular moat in Piers Anthony's The Source of Magic (1979). [DRL]
