Woolley, Persia

(1935-    ) US author of Arthurian fiction. Child of the Northern Spring (1987), Queen of the Summer Stars (1990), and Guinevere: The Legend in Autumn (1991) follow the first-person narrative of Guinevere from childhood to old age. PW attempts to amalgamate as many as possible of the surviving medieval Arthurian tales into her story: the result is a breathless jumble of characters, cultural tropes and themes. These blend uncomfortably with pervasive and intrusive late-20th-century ideas of feminism, morality and political responsibility, lending an uneven tone to the whole. [KLM]
