West, [Dame] Rebecca

Pseudonym of UK writer Cecily Isabel Fairfield Andrews (1892-1983), a lover of H G Wells and a formidable cultural critic and author of striking fictions from 1911; her pseudonym is the name of the heroine of the play Rosmersholm (1886) by Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), a role she played on stage. She is of fantasy interest for Harriet Hume: A London Fantasy (1929), a Posthumous Fantasy whose telepathically sensitive heroine cannot tolerate her lover's mortal faults while they are both alive, but once they are dead finds him an ideal companion; they then become deeply intimate with London in the course of exploring their new state.
