Wallop, Douglass

Working name of US writer John Douglass Wallop III (1920-1985), whose The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant (1954), was made into the movie Damn Yankees (1958) (> Baseball); it tells how a Pact with the Devil leads to what was in 1954 a remarkable defeat for the New York Yankees in the final game of the season. What Has Four Wheels and Flies?: A Tale (1959) is a Beast-Fable in which a pack of dogs gets into trouble with a Car that more or less drives (and flies) itself. [JC]
