Vinge, Joan D

(1948-    ) US writer, almost all of whose work has been sf, albeit with a fantasy feel and often drawing on Mythology or Fairytale for underpinning. Apart from Tarzan, King of the Apes (1983) (> Tarzan), her fantasy output is almost entirely confined to movie ties: Return to Oz: A Novel * (1985) (> The Wizard of Oz), Ladyhawke * (1985) (> Ladyhawke [1985]), Santa Claus, the Movie: A Novel * (1985) and the juvenile Santa Claus, the Movie Storybook * (1985), and Willow * (1988) (> Willow [1988]). JDV is a fine stylist; it is a pity that, in fantasy, she seems to have set her sights low. [JG]
