Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Team of fantasy Comics characters created by Kevin Eastman (1962-    ) and Peter Laird (1954-    ) in an independently published b/w comic book from 1984. They are four pizza-loving humanized turtle troubleshooters who live in a New York sewer and were transmuted through the action of radioactive mud. Intended at first as a parody of martial arts Superhero Teams, they became enormously popular, making riches for their creators, who went on to create a very enlightened and forward-looking but ultimately ill-fated comic-book publishing company, Tundra.

A long-running animated tv children's series started in 1987. [RT]
