Sweet, Darrell K

(1934-2011) US illustrator who began his career with covers for Ballantine Books, becoming the main cover artist for the firm after the inception of the Del Rey imprint. He has been associated, as a result, with Del Rey writers like Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, Jack L Chalker and Stephen R Donaldson. His cleanly lined, rounded, technically competent style – in which attractive females and insinuating Monsters feature in sharply characterized Landscapes – has become one of the default representations of Fantasyland and its inhabitants for many readers. In recent years he has also done fantasy covers for Ace Books and Tor Books. [JC]
