Sousa, John Philip

(1854-1932) US bandmaster and composer of many famous marches. In his one novel, The Fifth String (1902), the mystical "fifth string" on a romantic violinist's instrument proves to be a literal manifestation of Death, who speaks compellingly through the Music it makes. [JC]
