Reeve, Clara

(1729-1807) UK writer of sentimental fiction, sometimes with a Gothic element. She is relevant to the development of fantasy for The Champion of Virtue (1777; vt The Old English Baron 1778), which contains a supernatural element – an informative Ghost – but more importantly introduces into the concept of the Edifice a central haunted and/or forbidden chamber, where (in this case) the hero must spend several nights of redemptive contemplation (> Redemption).
