Rayner, William

(1929-    ) UK writer in whose Stag Boy (1972) an ailing young English lad finds a horned helmet in a burial ground, and discovers, when he puts it on, that it transfers his consciousness into that of the great stag it had immemorially represented (> Totem). This Magic increasingly encloses the lad in the stag's mind; he is freed only after a violent scene in which the stag is killed by hunters. It is a powerful tale. [JC]
