Pope, Elizabeth Marie

(1917-1992) US writer whose first novel, The Sherwood Ring (1958), takes an orphan girl from her dying father's home in England to relatives in contemporary Orange County, New York, where she encounters Revolutionary War Ghosts and Time Travel. It is, considering its sombre material, a strangely light-hearted and memorable romance. The Perilous Gard (1974), a Newbery Honor Book, is a darker-hued tale which retells Tam Lin. [DK]
