Paton Walsh, Jill

(1939-    ) UK writer, mostly of YA novels. A Chance Child (1978) is a strong Time-Travel story of a boy who inadvertently goes back to the grim, industrialized 19th-century English Midlands. JPW has also written Birdy and the Ghosties (1989 chap) for younger children. Knowledge of Angels (1994 US), a historical novel, gained some notoriety when the UK edition, which had to be published by a press set up for the purpose by friends of the author, was nominated for the Booker Prize.
