Otomo, Katsuhiro

(1954-    ) Japanese Comics illustrator and movie animator, a central figure in the world of Manga. His work incorporates both sf (> SFE) and fantasy elements, though with an emphasis on the former in his most important title, the ongoing Akira sequence, which first appeared in serial form in 1982-1986, and again from 1988; it has appeared in English from 1988. Several Graphic Novels have been calved from the ongoing epic, and it inspired a movie, Akira (1987), which KO wrote and directed. Of greater fantasy interest is the graphic novel, Dohmu ["A Dream of Childhood"] (1981; 1983; trans 1992), in which a Seven-Samurai band of children come together to fight off an older man with killing Talents.
