Murnau, F W

Tagged: Film, People.

Pseudonym of Westphalian movie director Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe (1888-1931); he died young in a car crash. No prints of his earliest movies – including Der Januskopf (1920; vt Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) (see Jekyll and Hyde Movies) – seem to survive. His two masterpieces of fantasy interest are Nosferatu (1922) (see Dracula Movies) and Faust: Eine Deutsche Volkssage (1926). Murnau's great talent was his "eye": his extant silent movies all show a beautiful power of observation. With the coming of sound – he went to Hollywood in 1927 – his technique became less effective.
