(1960- ) US Comic-book artist whose distinctive evocative drawing – in a sharp, lucid, deceptively minimal line-and-black style – became increasingly sophisticated and atmospheric as it matured in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The beguiling simplicity of his work is achieved through a process of refinement and distillation.
MJM spent a short period inking the work of other artists before drawing a number of fairly routine comic books for Marvel Comics, including Sub-Mariner and The Human Torch (Marvel Fanfare #43 1985), Incredible Hulk (#310-#313 1985), Solomon Kane (#3 1985) and Cloak and Dagger (#8 1986). He then drew two stories in the series Chronicles of Corum (#1-#6 1987-1988), based on Michael Moorcock's character, the Graphic Novel Triumph and Torment (graph 1989) – which featured two long-established Marvel characters – and eight stories in the series Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (#1-#4 1990-1991), based on Fritz Leiber's characters. His Graphic-Novel adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1993; > Dracula Movies) (#1-#4 1992-1993; graph coll 1993) showed a remarkable talent for creating gloomy atmospheres, which he has gone on to exploit very effectively in his Occult-Detective series Hellboy (Dark Horse Presents and Hellboy: Seeds of Destruction #1-#4 1994-1995; graph coll 1995).
