McGirt, Dan

(1967-    ) US author whose Jason Cosmo sequence is fantasy Humour. Jason Cosmo (1989) introduces the hero, who is befriended by a mirrorshaded wizard and farcically pursued through a Fantasyland studded with anachronistic gags, droll names like "the Incredibly Dark Forest", and invincible Villains, who are duly vanquished. Further and similar escapades are chronicled in Royal Chaos (1990) and Dirty Work (1993) – whose ploys include deliberately overdone padding, Cosmo's knowing asides about being a character in fiction, and Recursive references to Terry Pratchett. The series remains open-ended. [DRL]
