(1938-    ) Scottish-born writer, resident in Canada, whose first collection, Inspecting the Vaults (coll 1987), assembles stories of various kinds, including some Magic Realism tales. The Paradise Motel (1989) is a story of dour Belatedness whose protagonist – though he has left Scotland – cannot divest himself of the hauntedness of his homeland. [JC]
