Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997)

A term used in various ways in various places, and often interchanged with other terms, like sorcerer, Magus and Wizard. But when the term is used in this encyclopedia it generally concerns conjuring – i.e., stage Illusion. Whether or not they perform real Magic, conjurers in works like Magic (1978), Jack Curtis's Conjure Me (1992), Christopher Priest's The Prestige (1995) and Lisa Goldstein's Walking the Labyrinth (1996) are magicians.
