Magical Mystery Tour

UK movie (1967 tvm). Apple. Pr The Beatles. Dir The Beatles. Starring The Beatles. 50 mins. Colour.

A party of people go off by bus on a magical mystery tour. During the day they see or experience various bizarre events – stage-managed by Wizards who live in the sky in a "secret place where the eyes of man have never set foot" – interspersed with several Beatles songs and one from The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. State-of-the-art in its time, MMT now makes a pleasant period piece, with several sections retaining visual interest. The Surrealism makes MMT an early ancestor of the modern Rock Video; the style of humour foreshadowed that in Monty Python's Flying Circus. [JG]
