Guardian of the Threshold

This term could as well be rendered Keeper of the Gate. In the Monomyth evolved by Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) in The Hero With a Thousand Faces (1949), the Hero leaves the home zone and confronts a Guardian of the Threshold "at the entrance to the zone of magnified power", within which begin the great adventures pertaining to the phase of Initiation. In this encyclopedia the term is generally cross-referred to Liminal Beings. [JC]
