Geary, Patricia

(1951-    ) US writer and academic whose first novel, Living in Ether (1982; cut 1987), wittily portrays Southern California as a land all but coextensive with the Afterlife (the narrator, a professional medium, receives tantalizing communications from her dead brother), whose residents employ yoga, psychics and martial-arts training to deal with otherworldly complications. Strange Toys (1987), which won the Philip K Dick Award, is more overtly a fantasy; the complex plot involves Voodoo, incantations and malevolent sorcery. [GF]
