(1884-1915) UK poet, dramatist and writer of fantasy interest primarily for The King of Alsander (1914), whose mild-mannered English protagonist is directed by a Liminal Being to travel to Alsander, a land described in terms which combine Ruritania and Arabian Fantasy. There he soon becomes king, after a pixillated revolution. Some of the stories assembled in Collected Prose (coll 1920) are fantasy, and Hassan (1922) – a play – again evokes the world of Arabian fantasy, including Ghosts. [JC]
