Working name of UK author Mary Elizabeth Hawker (1848-1918). In a brief literary career blighted by illness she achieved great success with two much-reprinted short novels, Mademoiselle Ixe (1890) and the psychological Ghost Story Cecilia de Noël (1891). In the latter a resident Ghost affects individual visitors to an English country house. [RD]
