Egan, Doris

(1955-    ) US writer whose first sale – "Timerider" (1986), about a group of time-travelling art thieves – appeared in Amazing Stories. The Gate of Ivory (1989), Two-Bit Heroes (1992) and Guilt-Edged Ivory (1992) are Science Fantasy; the series' protagonists include a sorcerer from a planet where Magic works. Unusually for the subgenre, the three novels, although linked by place and characters, are not a trilogy but a series of linked singletons. As Jane Emerson DE has written the epic space opera City of Diamond (1996), the first in a projected trilogy. [JF]
