de Bernieres, Louis

(1954-    ) UK author of two novels of fantasy interest. The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts (1990) is set in a Land-of-Fable Latin American country riddled with corruption, Shamans and Cats who walk through walls. His second novel, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord (1991), also a Magic-Realism tale set in an imaginary Latin American country, even more extensively animates the world with Talking Animals, sorcerers and other forms of Magic. Underlying both tales are arguments about the political crisis of the continent, with specific reference to the astonishingly profitable drug trade. [JC]
