(1959- ) US writer whose first novel, Sunglasses After Dark (1989), introduced Sonja Blue, a punk female Vampire with human sensibilities. The book quickly gained a cult following, with the result that the author was soon absorbed into the short-lived Splatterpunk movement and went on to win the Bram Stoker Award for First Novel and the British Fantasy Society's Icarus Award. NC has continued the Sonja Blue cycle with In the Blood (1992), Paint it Black (1995) and A Dozen Black Roses (1996); the first three volumes were assembled as Midnight Blue: The Sonja Blue Collection (omni 1995). She has also written extensively for Comics, notably for DC/Vertigo's Swamp Thing (1991-1993) and Verotik Publications' Verotika (1995-1996), and was founder of the International Horror Critics Guild.
