(1940-    ) Canadian-born critic and writer, in the UK from 1969. Though most of his work has been sf criticism (see SFE), he has also published considerable criticism devoted to fantasy. Collections of nonfiction pieces are Strokes: Essays and Reviews 1966-1986 (coll 1988 US) and Look at the Evidence: Essays and Reviews (coll dated 1995 but 1996). He served as Reviews Editor of Foundation: The Journal of Science Fiction 1980-1990, and was a founder of Interzone in 1982; he remains Advisory Editor of that magazine and since 1986 has, most months, contributed a review column. He was Associate Editor of the first edition of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1979) ed Peter Nicholls (1939-2018), which won a Hugo Award; Clute was co-editor with Nicholls of the substantially expanded second edition (1993; rev 1995 US; exp vt Grolier Science Fiction: The Multimedia Encyclopedia of Science Fiction 1995 CD-ROM US), which is the text referred to in this encyclopedia as the SFE; it received several Awards, including the Hugo (again) and a BSFA Special. Clute began publishing fiction of genre interest with "A Man Must Die" for New Worlds in 1966; a novel, The Disinheriting Party (1973 New Worlds; much exp 1977) embeds a Fantasy of History within a delusional frame (see Delusion). In 1994 he received the Pilgrim Award. [JC]
