Clarke, Lindsay

(1939-    ) UK writer whose second novel, The Chymical Wedding (1989), features a complex Timeslip between 19th-century and contemporary figures, plus an elaborate presentation of an alchemical Quest for true understanding. The female Magus of Alice's Masque (1994) seems to be imposing an arduous Godgame upon the frustrated middle-aged male who lands on her doorstep; but once again a narrative remoteness casts a chill upon proceedings, especially at moments which obscurely replay a cruel Year-King Sacrifice. The male's slow earning of the right to enter into what seems a Ritual enactment of the worship of the Goddess raises the temperature somewhat. [JC]
