Presented in three six-episode series, this was one of BBC Television's major excursions into fantasy, with very high production values and a loving and painstaking – in places too painstaking – attention to quality throughout. The adaptation was reasonably faithful to the books. Somewhat misjudging its target audience, BBC broadcast the serial during the early evening, in the children's prime-time slot; the video set has been more sensibly marketed. [JG]
