Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997)

Cars appear in some fantasy contexts, especially in fantasies set at the cusp of the present, or actually in the future. Cars can be found in Dying-Earth tales – typically buried strata deep in the packed soil – where they may serve as emblems of Time Abyss; and they can be found in Dark Fantasy and Technofantasy, where they may well embody or be possessed by Demons, manifesting themselves as the distilled malice of a technology become malignant – the purest example of this is the movie The Car (1977), but Stephen King's Christine (1983), filmed as Christine (1983), can be interpreted in like manner.
