Callander, Don

(1930-2008) US writer who began publishing fantasy with the Brightglade sequence – Pyromancer (1992), Aquamancer (1993) and Geomancer (1994) – in which the young Wizard Brightglade and his partner (and lover) Myrn must master various Magics (those of Fire, Water and Earth to date, with Air presumably to come) in order to fend off threats to their world and their persons. The tone is light and reasonably assured. A new series seems to be underway with Dragon Companion (1995), whose librarian Hero finds himself hired out as Companion to a Dragon. [JC]
