(1945-2017) US writer who began publishing work of genre interest with "They Come Only in Dreams" for Adam in 1970. His early work is best understood as sf, though the Dying Earth presented in Cinnabar (coll of linked stories 1976) has the fantasy feel usual to Far-Future tales, and Cinnabar itself displays many of the lineaments of a fantasy City. EB has become less prolific in the 1980s-90s, and most of his later non-sf veers into Horror, one exception being The Cutter (in Silver Scream anth 1988; 1991 chap), which is fantasy. [JC]
