(1908-2006) US writer, rare-book dealer and philatelist. Although Bond has written little since 1952, his work remains fondly remembered; he was one of the most competent US writers of light and original Supernatural Fiction. Starting in 1937, he wrote for pulp and other Magazines, especially Weird Tales, Fantastic Adventures and Blue Book, where he produced a series of humorous – often Runyonesque – Slick Fantasies, ideally suited to the WWII years. Bond began with "Mr Mergenthwirker's Lobblies" (1937 Scribner's Magazine), about a man befriended by invisible creatures (see Invisible Companions); this developed into a radio series, a story series in Argosy (1941-1942) and a tv play, and formed the basis of his first collection, Mr Mergenthwirker's Lobblies and Other Fantastic Tales (coll 1946). Bond delighted in stories where everyday folk create wonderful inventions either by luck or by mistake – as in the Pat Pending series in Blue Book (1942-1948) – or are given miraculous powers by some ancient or enchanted object, as in "The Ring" (1943 Blue Book as "The Ring of Iscariot"), "Saint Mulligan" (1943 Fantastic Adventures), and other stories in The Thirty-First of February (coll 1949). In "The Bookshop" (1941 Blue Book) he created the collectors' dream of a bookshop (see Shop) full of fictional Books.

The best of Bond's later works, including the Squaredeal Sam series of Tall Tales, were all published in Blue Book, many being collected in Nightmares and Daydreams (coll 1968).

A friend and correspondent of James Branch Cabell, Bond has compiled James Branch Cabell: A Complete Bibliography (1974). [MA]

other works: Exiles of Time (1940 Blue Book; 1949); Lancelot Biggs: Spaceman (coll 1950); The Monster (coll 1953 chap Australia); No Time Like the Future (coll 1954); Animal Farm: A Fable in Two Acts (play 1964 chap) based on George Orwell's novel.
