Belasco, David

(1859-1931) US dramatist and theatrical producer who wrote some unremarkable fantasy in Fairy Tales Told by Seven Travellers at the Red Lion Inn (coll 1906). He also novelized, as The Return of Peter Grimm * (1912), his own play of the previous year, in which the eponymous elderly bachelor dies and becomes a Revenant to save his foster-daughter from an unsuitable marriage. Other plays of interest include The Darling of the Gods (1902) with John Luther Long which, though not specifically supernatural, created a Japan so heightened from reality that its example helped inspire Lord Dunsany to begin his own writing career.
