Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997)

Bards do not perform simply to entertain. The songs they sing, and the sagas they recite, comprise versions of the Matter of the land to which they belong. In fantasy tales the versions of Story generated by a bard may well have Magic force, confirming what has occurred or prophesying what is to come. [JC]
