Ariel: The Book of Fantasy

US large-format (9in × 12in) Magazine, 4 issues, irregular (Autumn 1976, 1977, April and October 1978), published by Morning Star Press, Kansas; ed Thomas Durwood.

A:TBOF started as a magazine but ended as an artbook, distributed via Ballantine Books. A lavish, high-quality production, it featured a wide range of fantastic fiction, including Comics, with an emphasis on Heroic Fantasy. The series remains more collectible for its art, including works by Richard Corben, Frank Frazetta, Burne Hogarth and Jeff Jones, than for its fiction, though it included short stories by Harlan Ellison, Michael Moorcock, Larry Niven and Roger Zelazny.
