Angels of Mons

In "The Bowmen" (1914 Evening News) Arthur Machen created one of the enduring Legends of World War I. The story – explicitly fictional, though this was widely ignored – is set at the Battle of Mons, whose outcome is in doubt until phantom bowmen, from the days of England's glory, come to the aid of the British Expeditionary Force. The story was included in Machen's The Angels of Mons, The Bowmen, and Other Legends of the War (coll 1915; exp 1915). [JC]
