(1949-    ) UK writer, son of Kingsley Amis. A surprisingly high proportion of MA's work is sf, though he has avoided any literary stigma for contributing to that genre. Other People: A Mystery Story (1981) is a kind of Posthumous Fantasy whose protagonist – she is ambiguously treated as being either dead or a victim of profound Amnesia, or both – undertakes a Rake's Progress through a savagely depicted London. Sometimes called sf, Time's Arrow (1991) sees, to simplify, a man possessed (see Possession) by a spirit that is living backwards in Time towards crimes committed during World War II. [JC]
