Alice Through the Looking Glass

US movie (1960 tvm). Alwynn/Dum & Dee. Pr Alan Handley, Bob Wynn. Dir Handley. Music Moose Charlap. Lyrics Elsie Simmons. Screenplay Albert Simmons. Based loosely on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-glass (1871) by Lewis Carroll, with elements drawn from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by L Frank Baum. Starring Roy Castle (Lester the Jester), Robert Coote (Red King), Jimmy Durante (Humpty Dumpty), Nanette Fabray (White Queen), Ricardo Montalban (White King), Agnes Moorehead (Red Queen), Jack Palance (Jabberwock), Judy Rolin (Alice), Smothers Brothers (Tweedledum and Tweedledee). circa 90 mins. Colour.

Having little of interest except that it exists, this tvm, performed as a stage musical, takes a few of the bits of the two Alice books and throws them together with elements from Oz – notably the Yellow Brick Road. Alice climbs through a Mirror, finds a Secondary World partly inhabited by Chess pieces, is threatened by the Jabberwock, becomes a queen, and at last discovers everything has been a Dream. [JG]
