Aamodt, Donald

(1935-    ) US writer whose Zarathandra sequence of comic fantasies – A Name to Conjure With (1989) and A Troubling Along the Border (1991) – features the adventures of Sandy McGregor, a human called in error to an Alternate World by a sorcerer (see Sorcery; Wizards) in search of a Demon to help him; here he learns the rules of the game, gains Companions and becomes himself a sorcerer to reckon with, though his discovery in the first volume – that all his actions have been moves in a cynical Godgame – is chastening. The second volume, a conventional Quest tale, is better told but less fun. [JC]
