Wylie, Elinor

Tagged: Author.

(1885-1928) US poet and writer, married to William Rose Benét. She repudiated her first work – Incidental Numbers (coll 1912 chap), a volume of poems – and is of fantasy interest primarily for two late novels. In The Venetian Glass Nephew (1925) an eighteenth-century cardinal has a glassblower craft for him a live nephew made out of glass (see Animate/Inanimate); when the nephew falls in love with a full-blooded woman, disaster seems ominously likely, until she agrees in the end to be transformed through Magic into porcelain. The proceedings are observed with care by Carlo Gozzi, author of many famous Venetian Fairytales in theatrical forms influenced by the Commedia dell'Arte. The Orphan Angel (1926; vt Mortal Image 1927 UK) features Percy Bysshe Shelley, who has not died but – transported to the USA in the good ship Witch of the West – travels across the new continent on a Quest for a mysterious female.
