Pseudonym of US painter and writer Albert DuAime (1927-2008), long resident in Paris; most of his novels are Fabulations whose Magic-Realism techniques transform autobiography – almost all expand upon episodes in his own life – into contemporary myth. Birdy (1979 US) translates its young protagonist's obsession with Birds and flying (see Talents) into a parable of the life of the artist. It was filmed as Birdy (1984), and future editions will carry an entry on that movie. A Midnight Clear (1982 US) presents the Christmastide experiences of a squad of US soldiers in World War II as a revelatory rite. Tidings (1987 US) is also set at Christmas, this time in rural 1980s France; a US expatriate philosopher obsessively gathers his widespread family together to celebrate the Season, an event made possible by a conflation of solsticial Miracles. Franky Furbo (1989 US) depicts a talking fox which has come back from the future to possess the body of a human. [JC]
