(1956-    ) UK author of Dark-Fantasy novels with an emphasis on strong females. All her works have romantic overtones, usually with a love story at the core. Her Sword-and-Sorcery Blackbird quartet – A Blackbird in Silver (1986), A Blackbird in Darkness (1986), A Blackbird in Amber (1987) and A Blackbird in Twilight (1988), plus the associated Darker than the Storm (1991), which, though not a direct sequel, uses some of the characters and the locations of the previous books – is set in an Alternate World like that of Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion. The Rainbow Gate (1989) is Contemporary Fantasy, while Sorrow's Light (1993) is again S&S. Warrington's historical Vampire trilogy – A Taste of Blood Wine (1992), A Dance in Blood Velvet (1994) and The Dark Blood of Poppies (1995) – showcases her distinctive blend of lushness, romance and dark shadows. Dark Cathedral (1996), a contemporary dark fantasy, discusses the conflicts of Witchcraft and Christianity; the sequel is Pagan Moon (1997). [JF]
