Thorne, Frank

Tagged: Artist, Comics.

(1930-    ) US Comics artist with a loose, slick line style who has developed a distinctive line of feisty, sexy female comics characters. Early, Thorne drew newspaper strips in the style of Alex Raymond, including Perry Mason and Dr. Guy Bennett. He gradually developed his own clean, controlled pen-and-brush style, after doing comic-book versions of Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim along with other work like Twilight Zone and Boris Karloff. A turning point came when he was selected as the main artist on Marvel Comics's Sword-and-Sorcery Red Sonja (#1-#11 1977-1979), which featured a character derived from Robert E Howard's stories. His line style became loose and fluid and he went on to create another similar, but much more bawdy, barbarian woman: Ghita of Alizarr, which first appeared in Warren Publishing's 1984 magazine (#7-#17 and #16-#28 1979-1982); subsequent colour episodes have appeared in many countries. Other bawdy creations have included the sf strip Lann (syndicated worldwide since 1985) and the outrageous humour strip Moonshine McJuggs (from circa 1991). [RT]
