Tenniel, [Sir] John

Tagged: Artist.

(1820-1914) London-born UK artist and illustrator with a fine pen-line style derived from his early work as an engraver. He is most famous for his memorable Illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Alice books. JT studied briefly at the Royal Academy, and despite being blinded in one eye in a fencing match with his father was a superb draughtsman. His illustrations to Aesop's Fables (1848) brought him to the attention of Punch magazine, for whom he worked for 50 years. His commission to illustrate Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) was not a happy one, since Carroll himself had hoped to provide the illustrations and was resentful about the publisher's rejection of his work. JT was reluctant to illustrate the sequel, but was eventually prevailed upon to do so – with great success. He was knighted in 1893. [RT]
