(1901-1978) Italian-born US educator and writer, who long advocated the creation of a universal language; his popular studies, like The Story of Language (1965), were influential. In The Sparrows of Paris (1958) the eponymous international cabal of criminals and Communists – headed by a woman who can turn herself into a Cat – plans to transform Americans into Werewolves. Tales of the Natural and Supernatural (coll 1971) collects stories of mild fantasy interest. [JC]
