(1946-    ) US author who has published nearly 100 short stories in various magazines and anthologies. His novels have ranged from explicit horror – Night Train (1984), Lyrica (1987) – to fantasy – The Magnificent Gallery (1987), Dragonstar (1981; rev in 3 vols 1983-1989 with David Bischoff; see below) – to more recent mainstream thrillers with supernatural elements, like The Blood of the Lamb (1992), winner of the Bram Stoker Award, The Resurrectionist (1995) and Night of Broken Souls (1996). He has also written for the stage and tv, including Mister Magister (1981) for American Playhouse, which won the Bronze Award at the International TV and Film Festival of New York and the Gabriel Award; his story "The Cutty Black Sow" (1984) was adapted for Tales from the Darkside in 1988. He began editing the Borderlands series of non-themed anthologies in 1990, and took its name for his own Small-Press imprint, specializing in hardcover novels and anthologies. TM's often controversial opinion column The Mothers and Fathers Italian Association has appeared in various small-press magazines. [SJ]
