Working name of UK artist David McKean (1963-    ), who has worked on Comic books, Graphic Novels and book and CD covers, and latterly a set of Tarot cards. McKean works in a wide range of media: each artwork may include painted and drawn elements with photographic prints and found objects attached; much of his recent work has involved computer-enhanced photography. A recurring feature in many of his comic-book covers has been a printer's font tray, in the receptacles of which he places objects associated with the book's storyline. His contact with US artist Barron Storey (1940-    ), beginning in the late 1980s, has had a profound effect on his work.

McKean first came to prominence with the publication of the Graphic Novel Violent Cases (graph UK 1987 b/w; 1991 colour) written by Neil Gaiman. McKean produced some haunting cover paintings for two series of comic books: Hellblazer (for #27 and #40 he also provided internal artwork) and Sandman, and painted artwork for two Graphic Novels featuring mainstream comic-book characters: the three-part Black Orchid (graph 1988 US; omni 1991 US) written by Gaiman, and the bestselling Arkham Asylum (graph 1989 US) written by Grant Morrison. His other work includes two further Graphic Novels written by Gaiman: Signal to Noise (1989 The Face; graph 1992 UK) and Mr Punch (graph 1994 US), the latter about childhood experiences with seaside entertainers. McKean is writing and drawing Cages (1991-current US), a projected 500-page comic Graphic Novel about creativity. His Tarot set was published in 1995 by DC Vertigo (see DC Comics). [RT]
