Madoc

Tagged: Theme.

twelfth-century Welsh prince, sometimes called Madog, believed to have sailed the Atlantic and discovered the New World, landing in Mobile Bay (in today's Alabama) in circa 1170. His historicity is hard to establish, and it is possible that both he and his voyage – recounted in, for example, Divers Voyages Touching the Discovery of America (1582) by Richard Hakluyt (circa 1552-1616) – are Myths. In the seventeenth century there were presumed Travellers' Tales of a tribe of White Amerindians, the Mandans, who spoke a language similar to Welsh. The figure of Madoc has been used in various fantasies, notably Sanders Anne Laubenthal's Excalibur (1973). [JG]
